PHIL COLLINS BECOMES GENESIS LEAD SINGER

Feb 2, 2023

On February 2, 1976 Genesis released A Trick Of The Tail, their seventh studio album and in many ways the one that changed music lovers’ perception of the band.

This was the first to feature drummer Phil Collins as full-time lead vocalist following the departure of original frontman Peter Gabriel.

After auditions that saw more than 400 vocalists considered for the role, during which Phil found himself teaching the potential lead singers the songs, the band decided that Collins should be the new vocalist.

This change led to the future, more commercial, sound of the band and, in turn, to the big hit singles that followed. Their first UK top ten hit Follow You Follow Me arrived in early 1978 and by the 80s they were established as one of the biggest bands in the world. You can hear all the hits, including Turn It On Again, Mama, I Can’t Dance and No Son Of Mine as well as tracks from all the albums including A Trick Of The Tail on our dedicated station.
