REMEMBERING THE HOME OF MERSEYBEAT

Jan 16, 2023

On January 16, 1957 the original Cavern Club opened in Liverpool, England. Originally it was a jazz club but it would become the centre of the Rock & Roll scene in Liverpool in the late 50s and early 60s and then the centre of Merseybeat and home to many Liverpool bands, including The Beatles. Their first appearance was on February 9, 1961 and by the time of their final performance (pictured) on August 3, 1963 they had appeared at the club 292 times.

Over the years a wide variety of popular acts appeared at the Cavern, including The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, The Hollies, The Kinks, Elton John, Black Sabbath, Queen, The Who and John Lee Hooker.

The location was, and is, Mathew Street although the original club closed and opened on a new site in 1973 and was filled in during construction work on the Merseyrail underground loop. It reopened in 1984.
