REMEMBERING TINA TURNER’S FIRST SOLO NO. 1

Sep 1, 2023

On September 1, 1984 Tina Turner finally hit the top of the US charts 25 years after she started her recording career.

The song that took her to the top was originally written for Cliff Richard, however it was rejected, either by the artist himself or his management. It was then offered to Donna Summer who sat on it for a couple of years but never recorded it.

Eventually it arrived at Tina’s door and What’s Love Got To Do With It was duly recorded and effectively relaunched the career of the singer, whose first hits were with her husband Ike.

The song was the stand-out track from the album Private Dancer and would become her biggest selling single as well as the second biggest selling single of 1984 in the US. It also made No. 1 in Canada and Australia.

Sadly, Tina passed away in May 2023 but you can still enjoy her music on our two dedicated stations.
