THE MAN IN BLACK

Feb 26, 2022

26th Feb 1932 was the birthday of Johnny Cash, who we remember on the day he would have turned 90.

John R Cash was born to poor cotton farmers in Kingsland, Arkansas and, after four years in the U.S. Air Force, he rose to fame through the burgeoning rockabilly scene in Memphis, Tennessee.

He was known for his deep bass-baritone voice and a super-cool style. His dress code earned him the nickname The Man in Black and his free prison concerts won the hearts of working people across the USA.

Among his many hits were stand-outs like, A Boy Named Sue, Ring Of Fire and I Walk The Line. Walk The Line was also the title of the 2005 biopic of his life that starred Joaquin Phoenix.

One of the best-selling artists of all time, Johnny Cash’s music embraced Country, Rock and Roll, Rockabilly, Blues, Folk and Gospel and his crossover appeal earned him the rare honour of being inducted into the County Music, Rock And Roll and Gospel Music Halls of Fame.

Johnny died on 12th September 2003 aged 71, but his music will live forever on our dedicated station.
